As part of the Carpathian Economic Forum, Minister for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine Mykola Kalashnyk and Ionel Scriosteanu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening cooperation to ensure reliable transit of Ukrainian goods.

The memorandum is based on an updated Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure between the two countries, which takes into account new needs and challenges in the context of ensuring the transportation of cargo and passengers.

The Memorandum defines further joint steps by Ukraine and Romania to develop transport routes between the countries.

This includes modernization and development of road border crossing points and access roads, strengthening railway connectivity, simplifying border control procedures, and expanding opportunities for handling Ukrainian cargo at Romanian ports.

A separate area of cooperation is the development of joint border infrastructure. Ukraine and Romania plan to increase the capacity of existing border crossing points and develop new connections. The updated joint strategy covers 17 border crossing points, 10 of which are new proposals.

«The Romanian route is extremely important for Ukrainian logistics amid the full-scale war. Our task now is to ensure the systematic development of the entire transport corridor: border crossing points, access roads, railways, and port infrastructure. The signed Memorandum defines specific areas of this work. It is important for us to increase border capacity and create stable and predictable routes for Ukrainian businesses to the European Union and Romanian ports», — said Mykola Kalashnyk.

The next stage will be the transition to the implementation of the infrastructure projects identified by the Memorandum and the mobilization of funding for their implementation. Ukraine and Romania will continue coordinating efforts to ensure the synchronized development of infrastructure on both sides of the border, increase its capacity, and strengthen transport connectivity between Ukraine and the European Union.
